When are we looking to release: Towards the middle of November 2019

What will be included in the kit:

  • Scopedome Main Controller
  • Scopedome Shutter Controller
  • 240vac motor, with gearbox, mounting bracket, adjustable length drive axle, drive cog
  • Inverter that controls the motor via the shutter controller
  • Cog rim - the section of teeth that is mounted to your moving section of roof. These will come in lengths of 1.8m, you join or cut these to your drive/run length.
  • Open and close industrial limit switches
  • Wired for operation

With the above kit contents in your hands, your job with then be to:

  • Design your roof to accept the cog rim
  • Provide a mounting point for the motor assembly
  • Work out the installation positions for the limit switches, and provide a striker plate for these to contact upon [for open and close limiting]
  • Install the two controllers mentioned above
  • Protect the wiring from damage, and you are ready to run!

SCOPEDOME CONTROL SYSTEM

At the heart of our new and soon available Roll Off Roof Motorisation Kit will be the Scopedome Control System.

In addition to the standard roof control function, the main controller has eight (8) control points [4 relays and 4 x AC switches - one AC is at the shutter controller, 2amp rating] that allows for the control of powering of the observatory's equipment such as the telescope, camera, lighting, ventilation, etc. 

Communication with the ScopeDome USB 2.0 controller with the telescope is achieved via ASCOM.

The ScopeDome controller is designed to work with selected weather stations and cloud sensors:

  • Boltwood Cloud Sensor
  • AAG CloudWeather
  • Heavy Weather Pro
  • CCTV ScopeDome Cloud Sensor

BASIC CARD HARDWARE FUNCTIONS

  • Control of the roof motor, providing information about its current mode: open, closed, openning, closing.
  • Power control up to eight devices of the observatory equipment [4 relays and 3 x AC switches on the main controller, 1 x AC switch on the shutter controller, 2amp rated].
  • AC power failure sensor.
  • Low battery power failure sensor.
  • Emergency close function of the roof in the case of bad weather conditions.
  • Emergency shutdown of the roof in the case of loosing the connection with the computer or the internet.
  • Remembering the position of the roof after power off.
  • Supporting a range of rain/ cloud sensors.
  • Safe Observatory input to hardware blocking the action of motor, for example, a user installed hardware switch to ensure mount is at the park position.
  • If connection to the mount via ASCOM, there is a ScopeAtHome input.
  • Optional, if humidity or basic temperature sensors are ordered, the driver will display basic information about the status of the observatory's sensors.
  • Optional internal and external temperature monitoring, and measurement of humidity within the observatory.
  • Measurement of current/ voltage of batteries, which supply the dome.
  • Driver and firmware revision procedures allow for the updating of the controller without being physically present at the observatory [but firmware updates should be done onsite].

In regard to the optional sensors for temperature and humidity monitoring, you can either on site, or remotely, monitor the internal or external temperature and the humidity within the observatory. With that knowledge, you can then activate ventilation or dehumidifying systems via the control functions of the ScopeDome USB 2.0 controller.

In regard to the roll off roof motor, gearbox, drive axle and cog, these are derived from our 3m dome's shutter system, providing a strong and robust drive unit. The cog is of dense sacrificial plastic, that should the roof get jammed, the cog is designed to fail to save the roof mechanism. Once the motor stops, the roof becomes interlocked and cannot be moved. This provides security to the access of the observatory via the roof. In the case of where the roof is required to be moved manually, the motor mounting bracket is slotted, and following the release of the mounting bolts to your structure, the motor assembly can then be lowered away from the cog rim. Your roof then becomes manually movable for servicing.
